One question. What’s the biggest thing you’ve learn about creativity? Anthony Roe answers: “Step out of your comfort zone to do something different. There’s not always a mold to follow, sometimes you have to be the one to make it.”
My take: Most of the projects we work on as creatives are rather unremarkable. Usually we’re creating something that needs to be made quickly. It doesn’t give us much opportunity to challenge the norms. Consequently, we can get used to working within molds that have already been made for us.
The flyer you’re designing, the song you’re writing, and that dance your choreographing are all something that have been done before. Perhaps not exactly the same–but they are very similar to what’s already out there. There are already rules, formulas and recipes that tell you what you should and shouldn’t do.
But to reach our complete potential, we need to occasionally make our own molds. We need to put aside the formulas and recipes that already exist and make our own.
About Community Pool: These posts are all about drawing from the creative community. Every creative has a unique perspective. When we share in others’ perspectives our own creative lens gets wider. So I ask one simple question of creatives. I share it with you, then I unfold it.
About Anthony: Anthony is the owner, lead creative director and creative minister at Awaken Design Company. He also runs a blog called Awaken Ambience, sharing some great tunes to awaken creativity.
