Does it? Sometimes I feel like the world is a treadmill. My running keeps it spinning. If I stopped running things would fall apart. At least that’s how I feel.
But I just got back from Argentina for 20 days. During those 20 days I stopped running. I’m not sure what I was anticipating when I got back home. I think I was expecting an apocalyptic scene with carnage strewn about…waiting for me to clean it up.
But that’s not what was waiting for me. The world adapted to a life without me. I actually felt pretty useless when I got back. That’s life. The world keeps spinning with or without you. Sobering thought.
What should we do with that knowledge?
Whatever you want.
That’s the beauty of this idea. You aren’t all that important. You don’t have to feel trapped. So many church-workers feel indispensable and they run themselves into the ground. But you can take a break. You could even follow a different passion than the one your job requires.
Let someone else take over your job responsibilities while you do what you’re most passionate about.
Take a sabbatical.
Perhaps just relax a little and know that the world won’t blow up if you don’t get everything done this week.
A stressed creative doesn’t produce great creativity. Remind yourself that you just aren’t that important. The world will go on long after you’re gone. Relax. Chill. You can stop running whenever you want.

This happened to me a few weeks back. I was actually confused that I didn’t get phone calls asking me how to do things. I came back and everything was just normal… sobering thought!

I sometimes feel the same way about blogging, twitter, etc., It’s a good reminder. Nice article.
