Yesterday I was approached by someone wanting to strike up a conversation. Normally I’m quite equipped to communicate with strangers, but this time something was wrong. It was clear from the dense smell in the air that he brought a foul stench with him to the conversation. That’s right. He cut some seriously aged cheese only moments before approaching me.
I was so overwhelmed by the smell that I had to take a few steps back. Imagine my distress when he took a few steps forward! He was completely unapologetic for his tear-jerking smell.
Just like this guy, we all create things that stink at times. Maybe it was that song you wrote, that poster you designed, or that picture you wanted. Either it wasn’t so good or it just stunk. Just like he made a stinky smell, you made stinky creativity.
Unlike my new friend, though, we usually get bashful about our stinky creativity. We’re self conscious about our art and are afraid of offending people’s senses. We can’t let this be!
All artists create stinkers at times. We need to own our stink and move on. Don’t pretend it doesn’t exist. But also don’t let it keep us from stepping out and taking risks. Be bold and create. Stinkers come, but don’t dwell on them.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. (I still don’t “get” Sagmeister’s work.)
Haha! Perfect! 🙂
