The world is a loud place. The noise can get numbing. Zombies are numb. And zombies aren’t creative.
When you find yourself numb—or experiencing creative block—it’s important to change things up. So why don’t you try shutting down the noise for a little bit to allow your brain to think?
Next time you’re driving in the car, shut off the radio and drive in silence. It may feel uncomfortable at first. But pretty soon you’ll experience a delightful moment alone with your thoughts. “Hello, thoughts. It’s been a while. I’ve missed you.”
Try it out! Silence can be the thing to get you out of your creative slump.
What do you do to grab that moment of silence?
To grab a moment of silence I listen to music. 😉
To be honest, I do get bogged down by the sounds of everyday life. When it gets to much, I get my noise cancelling headphones and listen to music.
I’ve tried driving without a radio or anything, but my mind wanders into places I don’t really want it to go. It may just be me, but I don’t think about creativity when I’m alone with my mind. I think about myself, and the many problems that can come with. Like what’s not right in my life, what I’m not happy with, etc. That’s what my mind defaults to. I don’t like being in that position. Music, however, will spark the creativity. It’s difficult for me to be creative without something stimulating my brain.

I’d still try the silence route. I think our mind needs time to process our disappointments and failures before it falls into a healthy place of creativity. I’d try going on a retreat for a week without technology or friends…and see what happens. It’s pretty amazing. 🙂
You mean, no iPhone?
Blasphemy.
Haha. Just one week. 🙂

Great thoughts. I love driving in the car without any music. It is one of the few times when there is no noise (especially if I’m by myself). As a result, I often find clarity on a process, thought, or creative project that I didn’t have before. The shower is good for that too.
Shower is definitely a great one. Anytime there’s droning noise.
