Few things drain me more than lengthy projects. I’m an obsessive guy that needs variety. If I’m stuck in one thing too long I want to shoot myself. I’m writing a book right now and am already dragging my knuckles writing the first chapter.
How will I make it? I have a few strategies, but my biggest is giving myself little victories.
I’m daily dividing the project into small sections. I’ve arranged the first chapter into multiple concepts. All I need to do is finish one concept in one day. Success!
When I think in big picture terms I’m easily overwhelmed. It seems I’ll never finish. But when I celebrate little “wins” I can be happy at the end of the day. To celebrate, I turn something from the book into a blog or share one of the concepts with someone. This gives me an immediate victory, plus I can get some valuable feedback.
What long project are you working on? Are your recording a song? Grab a bit of it and share it on your site. Get some feedback. Are you working on a massive website? Blog about a new technology you’ll be using and brag on yourself a bit.
Remind yourself that you’re awesome. Get inspired to keep going.
