“But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: (1) Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, (2) be compassionate and loyal in your love, (3) And don’t take yourself too seriously – take God seriously.”
I love the MSG version of Micah 6:8.
What a perfect way to live ours lives. I especially love number three: Don’t take yourself too seriously – take God seriously. I think too few artists live by this principle.
Even in our feigned “humility” we take ourselves too seriously. We think we’re inadequate or we don’t measure up. We fear what people will think of us because we take ourselves too seriously.
But what if I truly created in a fear of God – without taking myself seriously. How much more would I put myself out there. I would probably write that book that’s been swimming around in my head for the last week. I’d write more guest blog posts. I’d approach the worship leader at my church and audition to play in the band.
Who cares if none of those things work out? I’m creating because I fear God. I’m using the gifts He’s given me…because I have a responsibility to Him. Even if people think I’m a chump, it doesn’t matter. I’m fearing God. Not man.
I can’t afford to take myself seriously if I want to create amazing art for God. And I can’t be afraid of what others will think.
Another MSG gem: The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in God protects you from that. – Proverbs 29:25
